McAfee has just released the 2004-suffixed version of its Internet Security Suite and in doing so has demonstrated that progress is not always a good thing.
We've reviewed earlier versions of this internet-security software collection and have been broadly impressed. However, the slow operation of this latest edition truly tried our patience - it took half an hour just to install the program.
So, is it worth the bother? Well, you certainly get plenty for your money. The suite comprises four key elements, tied together by a simple-to-follow interface.
The core programs are McAfee VirusScan and Personal Firewall+. The former is on a constant lookout for electronic nasties and all being well, you'll never even know that the program is operational. However, should VirusScan suspect something untoward it will throw up a message alerting you of the threat. Much the same is true of the firewall application, which most of the time is invisible, apart from after installation, when virtually every online action you attempt results in a prompt requiring your authorisation to allow the application to proceed.
The remaining applications, however, divert attention from Internet Security Suite 2004's good points. The SpamKiller and Privacy Service functions are fine in principle but poor in execution. Clearing junk email using filters is of limited benefit, while making use of the various options in the Privacy Service section results in a serious slowdown of everyday computing operations.
In short, buy this suite for the anti-virus and firewall elements alone and you won't be disappointed. Turn on the other two functions and you'll wish you hadn't.
