Chancellor Gordon Brown has promised large companies a new research and development tax credit to boost enterprise and innovation.

However, no details on the tax credit have been given. They are said to be controversial and it is believed there will be more consultation on the matter before the March Budget.
Brown did not, as expected, say he would extend the existing credit for small businesses.
