Martin Ackroyd, the finance director of Morrisons, the supermarket chain, is being tipped to replace Sir Ken Morrison as chief executive when he retires.
Ackroyd, a 'Morrisons lifer' joined in 1974. He was appointed to the main board in 1987 and, with joint managing director Bob Stott, another candidate, is responsible for overseeing the integration of the Safeway business.
According to the Independent on Sunday his reward for doing it well could be the top job at Morrisons.
Sir Ken Morrison turns 73 next month and is the oldest FTSE 100 boss.
