Labour MPs are again on the attack over prime minister Gordon Brown’s decision to scrap the 10p starting rate of income tax, which they blame for the party’s fall in the local elections to a 40-year low.

The MPs said the government had failed to do enough to reassure them or their voters, and urged Treasury to reveal more details about its plans, The Daily Telegraph reports.

A loyal Labour backbencher Fabian Hamilton said the government had not done enough to reassure core voters in places like Crewe over tax.

‘It's not good enough to say we will compensate in some sort of fashion certain groups that have been affected,’ he said in BBC Radio Four interview. ‘People have got to know when they are going to be compensated and how much it is going to be.’
