Alistair Darling was accused of playing 'damaging short-term games' with the
country’s volatile property market yesterday.
The chancellor reportedly refused to clarify whether he would suspend stamp
duty in the autumn pre-Budget Report.
According to a report in the
Financial
Times, both Philip Hammond, shadow chief secretary to the Treasury and the
Home Builders Federation wrote to the chancellor pre-empting a new dip in the
market.
The Home Builders Federation said if speculation on stamp duty continued to
be debated in this manner, it could be jeopardise future transactions.
‘We don’t want to be waiting until November,’ it said.
Despite the pre-Budget Report being delivered in three months time, the final
resolution could be announced as early as next month.
