IDC survey predicts growing Internet use

Marc Brenner, Management Consultancy 02 Jun 2001

According to a survey by IDC, 117m Europeans were using the Internet the end of 2000, around 30% of its population. This figure is expected to double by 2004, to 233m, despite economic slowdown and dotcom failures.

"The dotcom shakeout has done nothing for the reputation of the Internet and e-business as a whole; however, it has allowed both consumers and companies to develop more realistic expectations of what can be accomplished using the Internet," said Daniel O'Boyle Kelly, IDC's program manager for European Internet economy research.

The survey also shows promising growth for the B2C sector, with Europeans spending $12.2bn online, double that of the year before. While this growth is unlikely to be maintained, O'Boyle Kelly believes the B2B sector will drive e-commerce as a whole. "Managers will also feel comfortable with focusing on the Internet-enabled process of optimisation, reduced cycle times, and cost control," he said.
