Ian Watmore, UK managing director of Accenture, has been appointed as the first head of e-government and will have responsibility for overseeing IT developments across the entire public sector.
Watmore's appointment is yet another indication that the government wishes to recruit more senior civil servants from the private sector - whoever is chosen as chief information officer for the soon to be formed HM Revenue & Customs is also likely to be appointed from business.
Prime minister Tony Blair said: 'I am delighted that Ian Watmore is to take up this role. He will be playing a pivotal role ensuring that IT supports the business transformation of government itself so that we can provide better, more efficient, public services.'
Ian Watmore said: 'The head of e-government is one of the biggest and most challenging IT positions in the UK today.'
