Two reports from the Audit Commission reveal that while public bodies are detecting more fraud - detected fraud in local government has topped £100m for the first time - progress has been slow and identified risks remain.
Benefit fraud remains the greatest risk to local councils with 99% of all cases detected involved benefits abuse totalling £95m. In the NHS, fraud found in family health services has more than trebled to over £3m.
Commission controller Andrew Foster said: 'Fraud against the public purse is a serious and growing concern and the issue affects us all by reducing the money available for front line services.'
Foster added there was a need for a firm focus on improving fraud prevention strategies, introducing meaningful deterrents and developing a strong anti-fraud culture.
